LEARN MORE

Guineafowl Adventure Company is guiding a 4-Day / 3-Night Presidential Traverse where we will stay in the AMC High Mountain Huts by night, and hike the entirety of the Presidential Mountain Range over the course of four days!

The Presidential Traverse is known as one of the most beautiful and rigorous hikes in the country, with miles of breathtaking above-treeline ridge hiking, unforgettable views of the White Mountain National Forest, and of course the satisfying achievement of summiting Mount Washington, the highest point in all of the Northeastern United States standing at 6,288’ above sea level!

This trek is for experienced hikers, but because we have the benefit of staying at the AMC High Mountain Huts, where beds, breakfast, and dinners are all provided, we can pack light and move with confidence each day, knowing our comfortable accommodations await us in the evening! Also, because we are spreading the traverse out over four days, our longest day
of hiking is only 6.5 miles, which gives us plenty of daylight to take our time, enjoy the scenery, and snap as many photos as we want!

TENTATIVE ITINERARY

Day 1 (8/8/23) : Great Gulf Wilderness to Madison Spring Hut

Hike 5.7 miles and gain over 4,000’ of elevation as we start our traverse in the Great Gulf Wilderness and slowly climb out of the woods and above treeline on the Osgood Trail. The Osgood Trail summits and traverses Mt. Madison on our way down to the Madison Spring Hut where we will stay the night. After getting settled in at the hut, relax, read, sight see, walk over to Star Lake, or chat with other hikers, eat a delicious dinner prepared by the Hut Cru, watch the sunset, and get a great night sleep above the trees!

Day 2 (8/9/23): Madison Spring Hut to Lake of the Clouds Hut

We’ll hike a total of 6.5 miles and gain around 2,500’ of elevation thanks to summitting Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Clay and finally Mt. Washington! Enjoy incredible vistas all day as we hike through the northern side of the Presidential Range! The terrain all day is rugged and technical, but incredibly rewarding and unique to any other ridgeline in the northeast! Enjoy views from the highest point in the Northeast when we summit Mt. Washington, explore the Extreme Weather Museum, and browse the visitor center. After spending time at the summit, we descend down to Lake of the Clouds Hut where we will rest for the evening. Enjoy similar sightseeing, sunset viewing, dinner eating, hiker chatting and blissful sleeping as the night before!

Day 3 (8/10/23): Lake of the Clouds Hut to Mizpah Hut

The shortest distance of our 4-day traverse, today’s journey will take us 4.4 miles and a little over 1,500’ of elevation gain as we continue our traverse on Crawford Path, and summit Mt. Monroe, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Pierce. Today we cover the entire southern portion of the Presidential Traverse, leaving two “add on” summits for our final day 4. After summiting Mt Pierce we will descend steeply down to the Mizpah Hut, where another full dinner will await us. Situated in a col, surrounded by forest, the Mizpah Hut is a quiet respite to reflect on our trip so far and rest up for our final day!

Day 4 (8/11/23): Mizpah Hut to AMC Highland Center

Today we will cover 5.2 miles and roughly 2,000’ of elevation as we continue along to summit Mt. Jackson and Mt. Webster, two “add on” summits to the traditional Presidential Traverse. After summiting Mt. Jackson, you will have completed the most extended Presidential Traverse! We will descend rather steeply down the Webster Cliff and Webster/Jackson trails back down to Rte 302, where we will cross the road and walk up to the AMC Highland Center where our traverse ends. Options to grab food and drinks upon completion, or head straight back to your original pick up location.
